Abstract: "Currently, the work 'Mar i cel' is inevitably linked to the composition that Albert Guinovart wrote in 1987 to be staged by the musical theatre company Dagoll Dagom. His music has undoubtedly remained in the collective imagination related to the tragedy by Àngel Guimerà. Nevertheless, the idea of setting 'Mar i cel' to music had already been conceived in the nineteenth century, within the framework of the Catalan Lyric Theatre project promoted by Enric Morera. Initially, the commission was given to Isaac Albéniz, but certain circumstances made the composer unable to finish the music. For this reason, shortly afterwards it was Morera himself who decided to compose music for the play, a project that was not concluded either. In the twentieth century, there were still a couple of other proposals that did not succeed. Considering all these failed attempts, this article traces the lyrical project of Guimerà’s tragedy, from Albéniz’s proposal to Dagoll Dagom’s version, which in the twenty-first century is still being performed on Catalan stages". |
