Abstract: "This article examines how David Vilaseca represents the process of self-exile of the protagonist of 'Els homes i els dies' and analyzes the displacement of identity that occurs in fictional subjects who disidentify from their cultural contexts. I argue that David Vilaseca contributes to the project of building a Catalan queer culture. I propose the concept of self-exile as a critical tool to analyze other literary representations of queer identities in the field of Catalan literature in which other queer authors have also constructed the identity of their characters based on a disidentification and disconnection from the dominant culture. This process leads them to geographical self-exile accompanied by a process of self-exclusion or opting out". |
