Es presenten la recepció i introducció de l'humanisme a Catalunya als segle XIV i XV, tema central del col·loqui 'Fourteenth-Century Classicism: Petrarch and Bernat Metge', que va tenir lloc al Warburg Institute de Londres el 12 de febrer de l'any 2010. Aquesta introducció és un afegit a l'edició en paper i no va ser llegida al col·loqui. L'article desenvolupa tant la recepció primària medieval com els estudis que, sobretot a partir del segle XIX, s'han ocupat d'aquesta qüestió. Així, l'autor traça un recorregut per l'humanisme a Itàlia i França (sobretot a la cort papal d'Avinyó) abans d'arribar a la Corona d'Aragó, i acota el terme 'humanisme' als territoris de parla catalana a "the activity of a group of Latin writers operating in the last quarter of the fifteenth century who include the historian Joan Margarit (c. 1424-84), the printer, antiquary and bibliophile Pere Miquel Carbonell (1434-1517), and the poet Jeroni Pau (c. 1458-97). Conversely, the existence of a true vernacular at this time is best exemplified by Ferran Valentí (d. 1476), a student of Leonardo Bruni, who translated Cicero's 'Paradoxa' into Catalan and wrote a handful of Latin poems, or by Francesc Alegre (c. 1450-1510), responsible for translations of Bruni's 'Commentaria tria de bello Punico' and of Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' (alongside material from Boccaccio's 'De genealogia deorum)".
